Watch: Golden Ray Salvage cutting of section one, progressed

In fact, the St. Simons Incident Response team used the twin-gantry heavy lift catamaran VB 10,000 to cut the capsized car carrier into sections.

According to the engineers, the first cutting of section one, has now progressed through the keel, where the thickest and most structurally dense portion of the hull.

To remind, the cutting process was first paused due to a combination of factors, including COVID-19 mitigation protocols, as well as the hurricane season.

However, the salvage operations officially started at the beginning of November 2020.

In light of the situation, Incident Commander Tom Wiker, Gallagher Marine Systems said:

Our crews are working under very challenging conditions. Recreational boats impeding the safety zone and drone activity in the area where our teams are actively working can be a distraction that leads to a mishap or injury. We ask that people please respect the safety zones as they are in place for the safety of the public and responders

What is more, minor pollution has been reported within the proximity of the wreck and along the shoreline, since the cutting begun.

Althoguh, responders continue to recover small pieces of debris, some of which are oiled, while light oil sheening continues to be observed adjacent to the wreck during the daily aerial and on-water surveys.
