Japan Hydrogen Association launched to establish a hydrogen supply-chain

The hydrogen is expected to play a central role in the fight against climate change and is seen as an attractive solution for decarbonization of the shipping industry.

Planned activities of Japan Hydrogen Association

  1. Proposal and coordination of projects for the social implementation of hydrogen;
  2. Consideration of fund, launching, and basic administration and management;
  3. Policy proposal for the demand creation, and deregulation;
  4. Undertake international activities;
  5. Information gathering inside and outside Japan, analysis, and publicity.

Japanese shipping company K Line and Toyota announced they have entered the Japan Hydrogen Association on 7 December. Other members include, ENEOS Corporation; Iwatani Corporation; Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd.; Kobe Steel, Ltd.; Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc.; The Kansai Electric Power Company. Inc.; Toshiba Corporation; and Mitsui & Co., Ltd.

In pursuit of the principle in our long-term guideline concerning environment, “K” LINE Environmental Vision 2050 – Blue Seas for the Future, under which we have promised not only to reduce the emission of greenhouse gas (GHG) from our own fleet but also to encourage decarbonization of society, we are diligently working toward our goal to become a leading player to supply and transport new energy,

Japan has shed a particular focus on hydrogen as an environmentally friendly solution for transport. Earlier in November, a group of Japanese entities joined forces on a new project aiming to promote commercial operation of hydrogen fuel cell ships.

The five partners include energy firms Utility Kansai Electric Power and Iwatani, shipbuilder Namura Shipbuilding, the Development Bank of Japan, as well as the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, which revealed plans to start a feasibility study on the commercial operation of hydrogen ships.
