Greek court temporarily releases Maersk Launcesto master


To remind, since the collision incident, the Maersk Launceston remained under arrest in the port of Piraeus.

What is more, the Polish captain of the container vessel, has been given until November 11th to prepare his defence, as he has been accused of causing an accident through negligence and violating international regulations for safety at sea.

According the vessel’s assessment, there were revealed some minor damages.

However, the vessel remains seaworthy and managers are currently arranging for corrective actions identified during a Port State Control inspection of the vessel.

On the other hand, Kallisto was severely damaged and became a total loss.

In light of the situation, the Piraeus Port Authority requested from court to give three months, in order to conduct its investigation.

Specifically, it will compile a case file that will include details of the two ships’ movements immediately prior to the incident.

Concluding, only two of Kallisto’s 27 crew members were injured, but reports indicated that the two have now been released from the hospital.
