Florida-headquartered Fresh Del Monte Produce has initiated a major programme of tonnage renewal for its services linking Latin America with the US market, writes David Tinsley.

The first two ships in a series of six all-reefer container vessel newbuilds have been handed over by CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Co, hosting features that will enhance group logistics as regards energy efficiency, environmental standard and ship productivity.

Based on a design drawn up by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research (SDARI), Del Monte Gold received her class assignment from DNV GL on June 30, followed by that for Del Monte Rose on August 5. Outfitting and construction of the four remaining vessels is in hand at the Guangzhou premises of Huangpu Wenchong, and completion of the last of the series is expected by March 2021.

Built to main hull dimensions of 192m x 30m, each vessel has electrical sockets for 634 high-cube 40ft refrigerated containers, stowed underdeck in the cellular holds and on the weatherdeck within the secure embrace of lashing bridges. The air-cooled reefer boxes and electrical infrastructure will provide the requisite, individual temperature control for the gamut of fresh fruit and vegetable shipments. Self-reliance in cargo handling is assured by three deck cranes.

With primary power from an eight-cylinder model of the MAN S60ME-C engine, and optimised underwater hull lines and vertical bow, the vessel is intended to achieve a service speed of 22 knots at an efficient fuel consumption. The auxiliary installation, sized for the substantial electrical load associated with transporting and handling full cargoes of produce, comprises four Daihatsu diesel gensets manufactured by the company’s Moriyama division in Japan.

Each vessel has been specified with a hybrid scrubber plant. Provision has also been made for connecting the shipboard net with the landside grid where the requisite interface is available in port, eliminating the need to operate generators and burn distillate fuel.

Furthermore, preventive maintenance system technology has been applied to main and auxiliary machinery in the interests of optimised running and long-term upkeep.

Shipping accounts for the largest portion of the group’s global energy use. The investment in the new generation of container liners reflects the commitment in 2018 to a strategy of reducing fleet emissions by 10%. The sextet will not only hoist overall transport capacity and transit speed, but will also cut energy consumption and air pollution per cargo unit.

North American Emission Control Area (ECA) edicts and the IMO global sulphur cap are the guiding influences, but the Del Monte organisation also has its own corporate objectives insofar as environmental protection sustainability is concerned. For instance, it was one of the first large-scale banana producers to receive the SCS Carbon Neutral Certification, obtained for its operations in Costa Rica.

Fresh Del Monte Produce offers ocean cargo services between the USA and Central America via its subsidiary company Network Shipping & Trading, deploying both owned and chartered vessels. The ships also transport the materials used to package the products as well as providing capacity for third-party cargoes.

Del Monte Gold and Del Monte Rose have been placed under the management of Norbulk Shipping (UK).
