Saudi Arabian operator Bahri is strengthening its dry cargo logistic capabilities with a new series of Kamsarmax-class bulk carriers built in Vietnam, writes David Tinsley.

The 80,729dwt Sara is the first of four sisters ordered in August 2017 from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard(HMD) to the account of Bahri Dry Bulk, the 60:40 joint venture of Bahri and Arabian Agricultural Services Co (ARASCO). Construction was assigned to the South Korean contractor’s subsidiary Hyundai-Vietnam Shipbuilding (HVS), which is set to deliver the second, third and fourth newbuilds over the course of the next six months.

The gearless, 229-metre design is suited to a wide range of bulk commodities, and will play a key role in serving the growing demand from Saudi Arabia and the wider region for imports of basic grains such as wheat, barley and corn and other cargoes.

Sara joined the fleet’s five other Kamsarmax carriers, completed by Oshima of Japan in 2013-2014, and deployed on long-term contract to ARASCO. The latter covers the complete agri-bulk procurement, production and delivery chain, and its interests include an ultra-modern grain and meal-handling and storage terminal, and stevedoring activities, at Dammam’s King Adulaziz Port.

Bahri, initially known as the National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia, secured funding of SAR 360 million (US$96m) from Bank Albilad in January 2018 towards the newbuild project, which is understood to have commanded an overall price of US$120 million. Bank Albilad had provided 70% of the financing for the company’s previous series of Japanese-built 82,000dwt bulkers. Husbandry of the latest tonnage has been entrusted to Mideast Ship Management.

Sara is powered by an MAN six-cylinder, two-stroke engine of the S60ME-C series, manufactured under licence by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. The model of machinery has a nominal maximum continuous rating of 14,940kW at 105rpm. In the case of the Bahri application, the installation offers a 14.2-knot design draught speed at the continuous service rating, with a 15% sea margin.

Direct drive is effected to a fixed pitch propeller benefiting from enhanced hydrodynamic performance by way of an EnergoProFin energy saving appendage. Claimed by originator Wärtsilä to offer average fuel savings of 2%, the device comprises a special propeller cap incorporating fins that rotate together with the propeller, reducing energy losses by weakening the hub vortex and by recovering kinetic energy from the rotating water flow aft of the propeller blades.

The ship’s auxiliary outfit provides a further reference for South Korean engineering and the Hyundai group’s scope for complete ‘packages’, as it entails three gensets driven by proprietary HiMSEN diesels. Each aggregate comprises a six-cylinder model of the H21/32 engine.
