Containerised batteries set to a major maritime innovation: AYK Energy

AYK Energy is aiming to become the world’s leading manufacturer of marine batteries with a new 5,000 sq m factory in Zhuhai, China.

The new factory will ramp up AYK Energy’s production capacity, using a new automated manufacturing system, to 300 MWH a year with the ability to scale up to 1 GWH a year.

AYK Energy founder Chris Kruger, said: The new AYK Energy factory will seriously disrupt the marine battery market. From here we can build the highest quality, safest and lowest cost class approved batteries in the world.  Our team is drawing on all our experience of working on marine batteries for 15 years, including pioneering the first ever marine type-approved battery.”

The new factory will see AYK Energy expand its production of containerised batteries which Kruger will be one of the biggest innovations in the maritime industries for the next five to 10 years.

“Containerised batteries have multiple benefits. They can be installed easily on deck without taking space below deck and incurring complex battery room safety requirements. Furthermore, the retrofit process is simple and does not require the vessel to be out of service for very long,” he said.

Once operational containerised batteries can be swapped out with another unit that has already been fully charged onshore.

AYK Energy plans to add two more factories in Europe and the US in 2024.
